ABOUT
Izzy Salangsang filled every day with joy, curiosity, and love. He was deeply cherished by his parents, Les and Lory, and shared a special bond with his sisters, Elory and Selena (and his love and warmth lives on through newest sister, Elyse). Izzy’s bright spirit and the impact he had on those around him continue to be felt throughout our community.
In honour of Izzy’s life, and with the blessing of the Salangsang family, the Durham Down Syndrome Association created the Izzy Salangsang Sibling Scholarship.
Each year, two scholarships are awarded to siblings of individuals with Down syndrome who are pursuing post-secondary education.
These siblings often play an important and unique role in their families and community, offering support, advocacy, and lifelong connection.
ELIGIBILITY
Who is eligible?

Students currently enrolled in a college or university program.

Must have a sibling with Down syndrome.

The DDSA is now accepting applications for the Izzy Salangsang Sibling Scholarship.
We are awarding two $500 scholarships to recognize the vital role of siblings in our community. Izzy’s spirit continues to inspire us, and we are honoured to support siblings as they pursue their post-secondary goals.

While the scholarships will never be below the $500 per recipient, the more money raised specifically for this amazing scholarship, the more that will be evenly distributed amongst the winners.

Izzy's family has found so many ways to keep his memory vibrant. Check out their beautiful 321 hats and sweaters that are currently raising funds for a memorial bench at Izzy's favourite zoo.
Meet Elory
My name is Alexa Young
Elory is Izzy's big sister. The special bond they shared is the inspiration behind the Izzy Salangsang Sibling Scholarship. Elory loved and cared for her brother so deeply, and she continues to be inspired by him today; she dreams of becoming a doctor or Special Education Teacher to help others like him. We know Izzy would be so proud to see his legacy honouring the incredible bond shared by other siblings.
